The Early Church Fathers

The Bible tells us that Jesus had established a Church (Matthew 16:18), which was founded upon the confession of St. Peter and the Apostles. This Church, according to St. Paul, is the Body of Christ; which is Singular, One, Undivided, and Alone upholding the True Faith. (Rom 12:5, 1 Cor 10:17, Ephesians 4:4). Before the Apostles departed this world, they had commissioned qualified men to continue in their doctrine, preserve the faith, hand it down, and to govern the Church in the truths of our holy religion (1 Cor 11:2, c.f. 2 Thess 2:15).

Examples of these include St. Clement of Rome, who was a direct apostle of St. Peter and Paul. Others are St. Ignatius of Antioch and St. Polycarp, both of whom were disciples of St. John. These, along with others, are known as the ‘Apostolic Fathers’ (60-150 AD), an era of early Christian teachers which is followed by the Ante Nicene (150 A.D. – 325 A.D.) and the Post Nicene Era (325 A.D. – 431 A.D.). Both eras contain fathers who diligently and piously combatted many pernicious heresies of their day, namely; Arianism, Macedonianism, Gnosticism, Docetism, Nestorianism, etc. Important fathers from these eras include St. Justin Martyr, St. Athanasius, St. John Chrysostom, St. Basil the Great, St. Cyril of Alexandria, and many more.

Nevertheless, their writings provide objective and indisputable evidence that the early Church was in fact the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church; i.e. the Oriental Orthodox Church, as she not only has a direct lineage that links the earliest fathers to their successors – the Bishops – but has preserved their teachings which also includes that of the Apostles. This is what makes the Church ‘Apostolic’. This very truth settles any doctrinal ambiguity and confusion that now exists within Christian circles; which is a product of various tragic schisms and heresies which were dangerously invented over the past two millennium under the influence of the devil. This reality continues to exist not only amongst those outside the One Church, but even by those within who Her who propose innovative teachings alien to the sacred deposit of the Apostolic faith.

Below is a list which covers various topics, which attempts to be a guide to both those within and outside the One Church on the matters on Doctrine.
