Per St. Paul: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16). This is the teaching of the Orthodox Church, as evident within her canons which calls them the: “authoritative and divine Scriptures, which are the foundations of the truth of our faith (Didascalia 21:18). Accordingly, they are of divine inspiration, inerrant, and infallible.
The diligent study of scripture is essential to the spiritual life of the Orthodox Christian for this very reason, as the “ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ” (St. Jerome). St. Basil says: “The study of the inspired books is the chief way we know what is required of us. In them, we find instruction about behavior, as well as the life of blessed people recorded in writing, that we may inhale the images of their devout lives and be guided by their good deeds.”
Given that the Orthodox Church is the “church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth”, her dogmas can also be found within Holy Writ as demonstrated below.
