In the modern western world, Christianity is commonly associated with chattel slavery, colonization, the deprivation of human rights, and white supremacy. This is due to the fact that there were many unfortunate events which have occurred throughout history in this regard; which has consequently given the Christian title a bad reputation due to the many crimes that were done in its name. The goal of this essay is to examine why Christianity is commonly associated with these atrocious examples mentioned above so that servants of the church may better understand and sympathize with those in the African diaspora whom are opposed to the faith, and to explain how such horrifying events are not justifiable in the context of Orthodox Christian doctrine and dogma.
I also deemed it necessary to write this article to communicate to those of African descent as myself that Orthodox Christianity precedes the gruesome treatment of our ancestors by the Western Churches which departed from her; and by extension, is native to the African continent and thus has contributed much to the Church on behalf of Jesus Christ whom founded her. I will be providing proof from history, in addition to references to support my case. Please note that offensive language and graphic details will be used since I will be giving examples from history in regard to how slaves were treated, together with quoting directly from theologians whom justified the owning of slaves. Therefore, my intention is not to offend any one within my reading audience.
